1️⃣ Introduction
Our Minds Matter (OMM) is a teen-led movement dedicated to suicide prevention and mental well-being by fostering peer-to-peer support and social connectedness. The organization has expanded significantly, delivering mental health education and resources to tens of thousands of students nationwide.
2️⃣ Key Achievements in 2023-2024
1. Program Reach & Expansion
149 active clubs in high schools and middle schools, primarily in the DC metro area.
66,700+ teens engaged in OMM programs.
Expansion of the Middle School Program into 39 schools, addressing youth mental health at an earlier stage.
Launch of the Teen Center Pilot Program in 13 Fairfax County community centers, reaching teens with limited access to mental health resources.
2. Impact & Effectiveness
77.1% of club members feel socially connected to their peers.
73.2% are willing to seek help for mental health struggles.
84.5% feel confident supporting a peer who is struggling.
75.4% practice self-care and healthy habits to improve well-being.
85% of teens reported that OMM positively impacted their mental health.
Recognized with the Morgan Stanley Children’s Mental Health Innovation Award and the APA Foundation Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health.
3. School-Wide Campaigns & Community Initiatives
Move with Music for Mental Health Action Day in partnership with MTV, reaching 38,600+ teens.
“Under My Umbrella” Campaign fostered LGBTQ+ support and awareness across 35 schools in Virginia.
Vision Board Activity in DC Public Schools encouraged self-care, goal-setting, and positive mental health habits.
Fairfax County Peace Award presented to OMM club leaders at Thomas Edison High School for reducing mental health stigma.
4. Research & Program Evaluation
Partnered with the University of Missouri to research peer-to-peer mental health models in suicide prevention.
Ongoing studies to compare mental health outcomes between OMM participants and non-participants in the same schools.
